Salisbury Lodge Medium

Mike Glover Email:

Plan is to walk in from Flora carpark on Saturday morning and spend the night at Salisbury Lodge (1 serviced hut ticket). During the weekend we will explore the surrounding tableland and caves in the area and spend some time learning navigation and bushcraft skills. This trip is aimed at helping the less exprencied people to feel more confident  with leading trips. Children welcome too. Depending on weather and conditions there may be the option to return via Gordons Pyramid.

Lodestone / Hodder

We leave from the Flora car park (960M) and begin a steep ascent through beech forest to Lodestone (1262M) a good place for morning tea. We then descend, very steeply at times, to the saddle (1180M) between Lodestone and Hodder before acsending to Mt Hodder (1462M) - a good place for lunch. Alternatively it is possible to sidle along the side of Lodestone reducing the climb by 60M.

After lunch we head in a SW direction on a circuit back to the Flora track arriving at Flora Hut soon after reaching teh Flora track. A pause to look at the resident wekas and have a snack before heading back to the car park and return to Nelson.

Most of this walk is marked route only, though bush open and easy to walk through. There are some steep sections and it is moderately long.

SHIFTED from August (cancelled due to bad weather). The less visited Northern Coast for an easy tramp with idyllic overnight camp.
From Wainui Bay we head to Whariwharangi for lunch at the hut or on the beautiful beach. Then on to Mutton Cove where we will drop packs for a side trip to Separation Point and then back to set up camp. On Sunday we head to Anapai Bay on the coastal track and then to the track junction for Totaranui. Up over Gibbs Hill (405m) on the main track and back down to Wainui Bay. Perhaps a side trip to Wainui Falls or to Taipo Point if there is time.

This is part of the ATNP GW so campites must be booked at $15 a site.

Once there, anyone can do as much or as little as they want to, with walks ranging from 10mins to a 9hr ridgeline traverse with views over Port Underwood and across to the North Island. The water temperature is bracing all year round and offers a delightful end to a womble in the hills. Doc camp fees are $15, facilities excellent and there is a glowworm grotto onsite. Likely to include a pause at Pelorus Bridge for a swim if warm either way.
